Turkeys

At Cwrt Henllys we adopt the best of traditional farming methods. Our turkeys roam freely in pastures where they can flaunt their natural behaviour, with room to fly, dust bath and roost.

At night the turkeys have warm shelter, with deep straw and plenty of fresh air. Furthermore, our free range, outdoor reared turkeys don’t need to have their beaks trimmed as they are not bored or overcrowded!

We use slow-growing strains grown to maturity over several months. Their feed is based on locally grown cereals and vegetable protein, and we don’t use additives, drugs or growth promoters.

The young turkeys (known as poults) arrive at our farm at 1 day old and are nurtured under a heat lamp until strong enough to weather the elements. They are then transferred to the livestock barn with access to the outdoors in the day and fenced in at night time – well away from any our legged friends! Fed only on a natural diet, with plenty of free roaming space, a very happy turkey in our opinion! At 20 weeks (compared to 9-20 weeks for factory farmed birds) the turkeys are processed on farm, they are plucked and hung in a chiller for seven days to mature before finally being dressed and labelled for delivery.
